Hi everyone and welcome to my blog Off Finding Sparks! I am so excited your here! Since you’re here, let me tell you a little bit about myself!
I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Cumberland, Maryland where I was a competitive gymnast, cheerleader, and dancer. I loved being active, but I never jumped into the exercise world until I went to college in Harrisonburg, VA at James Madison University. During that time I found it hard to make friends and noticed I was gaining weight, so I started going to group fitness classes. I went to every class possible from bootcamp, to yoga, and even boxing, but my favorite was Zumba. I stayed at JMU for a year in a half until I realized it wasn’t for me and I packed up and enrolled at Fairmont State University in Fairmont,WV.
At Fairmont, I gained the confidence to join a sorority where I met two of my best friends Kristen and Jasmine. Kristen gave me confidence and Jasmine gave me the courage in life. We started going to a few different classes together, but Zumba was the one we attended regularly, and one day the instructor asked me if I was interested in teaching, I sprung on that chance. I became certified in Zumba in 2011 and started teaching in my hometown right after. The class started to grow daily as I was working as the receptionist learning everything I could about health and fitness until my family moved in September to Raleigh, NC.
During my time in Raleigh I taught 5th graders by day and Zumba by night at a local YMCA. My supervisor at the time must have noticed my talent and encouraged me to obtain my AFFA Group Fitness Certification, so that I could teach other classes at the YMCA. In 2012 I attended a day long workshop to teach multiple classes. I continued to teach even at graduate school at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, which is when I started this blog. The people around me encouraged me to write about health and fitness so that I could help other people with their journeys.
However, in 2014 my life took a spiral and I had a hard time blogging on a daily basis and focused on my teaching career which drained every inch of me, eventually I wised up and quit.
The experience was not a good one and I realized teaching was not my passion, so I started blogging again. Once I moved to San Diego, CA , I began training, teaching a ton of new fitness classes, and worked at a fitness corporation as their office manager. In April I competed in my first NPC bikini competition and placed 8th. To me I was proud to push my body harder then I ever have and am excited to do it again sometime in the future.
The best part about my journey is learning who I am, who I want to be, and what I want to do with my life. I am now back in Maryland teaching group fitness and going back to school for physical therapy. I love watching the body grow, strengthen, and change through exercise, but most importantly I love watching people change for the better.
With that said, I encourage you to follow me through my experiences and to finally follow your dreams!
